How to look after your mattress
Given its size and difficulty to manoeuvre, many people forget or begrudge cleaning their mattress. However, a mattress is an expensive purchase which, when coupled with the fact that we spend one-third of our lives in bed on average, is more than enough of a reason to look after it.
Follow these four steps on how to take care of your mattress.
1. Vacuum regularly
On average, one singular bed contains 10,000 dust mites. Vacuuming your mattress every time you change your bed linen allows for regular prevention against dust and dirt.
For a sufficient clean, you should use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner and make sure that it's clean before use. We recommend focusing on corners and nooks where dirt and debris are likely nestled.
2. Deodorise
Sweat build-up and other substances accumulate on your mattress over time and cause bad smells. Now, the last thing you want to do is cause irritation by heavily spraying your mattress with scented products or harsh chemicals.
A great technique is to sieve or sprinkle baking soda over your mattress, After 30 minutes, vacuum it off. As a natural deodoriser, baking soda will eliminate any pungent smells without causing irritation.
3. Remove any stains as they occur
Whether it's sweat, urine, vomit or blood, try to attack the stain as soon as possible as you will have a better chance of complete removal.
If you get to the area quick enough so that it’s still wet, blot it out with a dry towel. Be sure to use cold or lukewarm water as hot water will allow the stain to set into the fabric.
For significantly tough stains, baking soda comes in handy once again. Sprinkle a generous amount onto the stain with cold/lukewarm water before scrubbing.
Stains occur in higher frequencies in care homes and with autistic children. Reinforced Beds offers specific beds for care homes and children with autism.
4. Invest in a good mattress topper
Mattress toppers extend the life of your mattress as they take pressure off it and prevent it from wearing out quickly.
Not only this, but mattress toppers are also easier to clean and maintain by comparison to mattresses. A good mattress topper will prevent a stain from reaching the mattress surface; saving you from incessant scrubbing.
We recommend our Air Flow mattress topper. It is anti-dust mite and machine washable, so you can sleep easy knowing that your bed is protected from bed bugs and stains.
