Looking for a loft bed for an adult or older teen? Our collection combines a raised single sleeping area with usable space underneath for storage, a desk or seating. Every current frame has a published user weight guide of up to 20 stone (127 kg), but intended use differs between models, so compare the height, construction, ladder and individual product guidance before ordering.

If you are looking for a guide to choosing a loft bed, we have you covered.

Compare Our Loft Beds

Our wooden and steel loft beds provide different amounts of underbed clearance and are intended for different users. Use the comparison below to identify the most suitable option for your room.

Model Configuration Construction Underbed clearance Ladder Intended use Guarantee
Beccles High sleeper Knotless rubberwood with wooden slats 161 cm Check the selected configuration before ordering Everyday use, including suitable adult use within the published weight guide 5 years
Newton High sleeper Steel frame with tubular slats 147 cm Angled and reversible Older children, teenagers and occasional adult use 3 years
Harpley Mid sleeper Steel frame with tubular slats 73.5 cm Angled and reversible Growing children and teenagers who need easier access 3 years

All three models are single loft beds with a published user weight guide of up to 20 stone (127 kg). This figure is a weight guide rather than a blanket statement about suitability, so the intended use of the individual model should also inform your decision.

Choosing Between a High and Mid Sleeper

A high sleeper provides the greatest amount of usable space beneath the sleeping platform. The Beccles offers 161 cm of clearance, while the Newton provides 147 cm, giving you more flexibility to create a desk area, seating space or taller storage arrangement.

The Harpley is a lower mid sleeper with 73.5 cm of underbed clearance. It provides useful room for drawers, storage boxes or low furniture while requiring a shorter climb. This makes it a practical choice for growing children and teenagers who do not need the full clearance of a high sleeper.

Material is another important consideration. Choose the Beccles if you prefer the appearance and feel of a wooden frame. The Newton and Harpley use steel construction and offer reversible angled ladders that can be positioned to suit different bedroom layouts.

Are Loft Beds Suitable for Adults?

Some loft beds are suitable for adults, but weight support is only one part of the decision. Frame construction, intended use, ladder access, mattress depth and available ceiling clearance must all be considered.

The Beccles is positioned as the main everyday-use option for adults within its published 20-stone user guide. The Newton may accommodate occasional adult use, while the Harpley is primarily designed for growing children and teenagers. If the bed will be used regularly by an adult, select the model based on that intended use rather than relying on the weight figure alone.

Adult users should also consider how comfortable they are climbing a ladder and entering or leaving a raised sleeping area. A loft bed may not be appropriate where mobility, balance or unrestricted access is a concern.

Measuring Your Room for a Loft Bed

Check the complete room layout before ordering, not just the available floor area.

  • Measure the bed’s overall height and allow enough clearance above the mattress for the user to sit up comfortably.
  • Include the ladder when measuring the total footprint and the space needed to approach the bed.
  • Compare the underbed clearance with the height of any desk, seating or storage you intend to place below.
  • Check that doors, wardrobes and drawers can still open without obstruction.
  • Consider ceiling slopes, windows, radiators and light fittings when deciding where the frame will stand.
  • Confirm the required mattress size and maximum permitted mattress depth* on the individual product page so the guard rails remain effective.

*Our bunk bed mattress collection hosts mattresses with the depths suitable for loft beds.

The Beccles is the tallest frame at 205 cm overall, followed by the Newton at 184 cm and the Harpley at 110 cm. Measure the exact installation area rather than relying solely on the room’s maximum ceiling height.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you sell double or king-size loft beds for adults?
No. The loft beds currently available in this collection are designed for a standard UK single mattress. Searches for double and king-size loft beds should not be treated as equivalent because these larger sizes are not currently offered.

Can a loft bed be used in an attic room with a sloping ceiling?
Potentially, but measurements must be taken at the exact position of the sleeping platform. Allow enough clearance above the mattress for comfortable movement and make sure the slope does not restrict ladder access. A mid sleeper may be more practical than a high sleeper where ceiling height is limited.

Does an adult loft bed require a special mattress?
The current loft beds take a standard UK single mattress, but the mattress must comply with the maximum depth specified for the frame. A mattress that is too deep can reduce the effective height of the guard rails, so always check the individual bed’s mattress guidance before purchasing.
