Are divan beds sturdy and do they make good heavy duty beds?
With divan bases, metal frames and wooden frames to choose from it can be tricky to know which type of bed is right for you. If sturdiness and durability is important to you you'll want to consider the construction of the bed and the materials it is made from. Some bed styles are sturdier than others, but quality of materials and manufacturing also plays a role. Are divan beds sturdy, or is a slatted wooden bed frame a better solution? In this blog we'll explain why divan beds are a great option for durability and help you choose your perfect bed.
Are divan bed frames sturdy?
Divan beds are known for being fairly sturdy because they're constructed from a rigid frame that is covered in fabric. This hollow frame might contain a solid platform top, or there could be springs constructed into the base to offer extra bounce and support. The materials used to construct the base and the nature of the platform will play a role in the sturdiness of the bed.
Here at Reinforced Beds our heavy-duty divan bed bases are built from solid MDF throughout. This is stronger than timber and pegboard which is commonly used in divan bases. Our bases are designed to offer heavy-duty support and they're significantly stronger than the average divan base.
Are divan beds sturdy compared to wooden slatted or metal bed frames?
It's tricky to define whether divan beds are sturdier than other frames because it depends on the quality and structure of each individual bed. Divan bases can be more durable because there are fewer parts to develop wear and tear over time. Metal and wooden bed frames, particularly low quality, cheaply-made products, can become squeaky and wobbly with age.
However, high quality wooden frames with solid wooden slats can offer exceptional levels of strength and longevity. Similarly, wrought iron metal bed frames can be incredibly sturdy, particularly when combined with fully welded steel mesh bases. To get an idea of a bed's sturdiness you can check its maximum weight limits. The higher the weight limit, the sturdier the frame.
Is a solid platform or sprung top sturdier for a divan base?
Sprung divan bases can give the bed additional durability and longevity compared to solid platform beds. This is because the springs absorb lots of the impact of users moving around on the bed in order to reduce wear and tear on the divan frame itself. However, solid platform divan bases tend to be more affordable than the sprung options which is why they're very popular.
If you're looking for ultimate durability and can afford to pay extra for a sprung base, the investment will pay off in a longer-lasting bed frame. However, when you choose a heavy-duty bed with a solid platform base you can feel confident that it will be very sturdy despite the lack of springs.

What are other benefits of divan bases?
Divan bases are relatively easy to install and move around compared to other bed frames because they're usually delivered in at least two parts which fix together. Plus, there's no need to build the frame unlike with many wooden or metal bed frames which come in parts.
Divans are also easier to customise than wooden or metal bed frames if you want to change the style and finish of your bed. You can easily switch out the headboard and keep the same base. If you'd like to hide the sides of the base you can use valance sheets to do so.
Are divan bases sturdy enough for heavy-duty mattresses?
Heavy-duty mattresses tend to be very deep and heavy because they're usually denser in materials than standard mattresses. For this reason they need a heavy-duty bed frame or base to support them. A standard divan base may not be durable enough for a very thick and heavy mattress, but a heavy-duty divan frame should support the weight adequately.
How long do divan bases last?
Divan bases can last anywhere between one year and a decade depending on a range of factors. The quality of the construction plays a role, as does the size and weight of those using the bed. All bed frames and divan bases have maximum weight limits and if these are exceeded the bed will wear out faster.
If it's important to you to have a bed that will last for many years, look for those that come with a guarantee. All of our divan bases are guaranteed for at least 12 months, but some come with a 10 year guarantee which is testament to their excellent strength and durability.
What are the signs that a divan base needs to be replaced?
The biggest sign that a divan base is ready to be replaced is if it's sagging in the middle. Usually the sagging occurs exactly where the users sleep, so if it's a double or king-size bed used by two people there will be two sunken areas, one on each side of the bed.
The sagging might be visible when you lift up the mattress and look at the base itself, or it might simply be a sensation you feel when lying on the bed. If you wake up with a stiff, sore or achy back this is another sign that the divan might be past its best and ready to be replaced.
